You can keep wading for quite a while until you reach waist-deep water. Snorkeling is also popular, but only at the two extreme beach ends where the beach is guarded by natural rock promontories. Because the beach is connected to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, it is never crowded, although parking is limited.

This is definitely a must stop beach on Kohala coast. This is one of the far north beach. The beach is big, the resort has 40 parking spot for public. Hence this beach is never crowded. I spend few hours in that beach. There are bathroom facility near the beach and it is well maintained by the resort. This is a very quiet beach. There is no public rental service on the beach, hence you have to bring your own equipments.

I saw a lot of people were Snorkeling. It is a good place to play with the ocean waves. I tool the Ala Kahaki trail next to the beach and walk all the way to Hapuna beach. The coastal hike was amazing. Don't get scared with the private property sign. The trail is actually open for public. I highly recommend this beach.

What an awesome beach!! Plenty of shade, and soft beautiful sand. This is an excellent swimming beach, though we didn't find the snorkeling to be the best. There were plenty of fish to see, but I don't think turtles frequent this place. Great for a family day at the beach!

You enter through the Mauna Kea gate house and apparently they only give out 20 parking spots a day to the public. We went midday during the holidays and expected it to be full, but there were still some spots left. Highly recommend!

Mauna Kea Beach is stunningly beautiful golden sand beach, one of the most beautiful of all the great beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. Long and wide, the beach is fabulous for long walks but is even better for swimming as the sand slowly slopes out into the water, so entering it is easy even for children or beginners.

This is a stunning beach but the parking is very limited. We were told to get there by 830am and it's worth it. There is even a decent amount of shade and easily accessible restrooms/showers.

We love this beach even if it is flanked by the private property of the Marina Kea hotel which is a plus and a minus. It is a nice clean beach, a few minutes walk from public access parking but parking is limited so come early or late or hike in from the north end of Spencer Beach. It has toilets add showers, life guard and generally forgiving water but being crescent shaped you should stay out of the sucking middle when surf is up. There is a beach bar until sunset but warning cocktails are now at $16 plus tax and tip. The only negatives are the parking situation - we love to come for a few hours before sunset and never have a problem though, the lack of shade (bring your own if you need it) and the always present hotel crowd - but it's a large beach with plenty of room.
