Interesting to know the history of the place, it was easy to get to once we found the right road, and the views were amazing. We even got to watch the whales feeding offshore! We didn't come upon anyone else.
Mo'okini Heiau is a hidden gem for a Hawaiian stop on your visit to the Big Island. With so much important cultural and historical attached to this site, I'm surprise me the road isn't paved to it. The site is well maintained, fairly easy walk to Heiau. The road getting to the Heiau is a tough one but we did it in our little rented Nissan Sentra.
Must stop if you are anywhere near the North end of the island. Serene haunting beauty. Amazing views of Maui in the distance. WARNING the road in can be very rough. May make sense to walk in (which is beautiful in its own way).
It takes a while to walk here, but it is worth the visit. It is largely similar to other temples on the island, but you can go inside of this one. The path leading to the temple is not highly maintained, but the area around it is. If you do go here, remember that this is a sacred site, so please be respectful.
Mo'okini Heiau requires an investment of time and energy to get to, it's not a simple 'park and you're there' visit...but the effort is well worth the reward.
