An important, must-visit site if you are interested in Hawaiian history or wish to understand Hawaii better. Tons of interpretive exhibits and a lot of information. Easy trails to historic sites. Well worth the visit if you are on the Big Island.
Very very disappointing junior ranger program. Rangers that just sit in a building. No ranger lead program. Not much interactive for kids to do.
A bit too simple... The visitor center is virtually the only place 'tour-able'. The biggest heau is locked off (guess only for events?). The history is quite interesting, but really not much actual remnants to be seen...
Love the national parks. Kids have been to so many wonderful programs and learning experiences. Sitting and reading a pamphlet for over and hour trying to find ‘dates’ and copy large words is of no educational value for an eight year old.
So sad. Far, far sub par compared to other national parks in terms of programs, things for kids to actually learn. When explained to the Ranger, the attitude was pretty much ‘so? If it if they need energy, want to buy some snacks here?’
Another amazing historic location to visit on the Big Island. Great informative information center. Well worth the visit.
Skip it and go to Volcano, Pearl Harbor or one of the real national parks with actual programs that will leave your kids with amazing learning experiences, memories and knowledge they will retain for decades. Or if all else fails buy a cheap snorkel and swim anywhere around the island and your kids will take more away.
The national parks should be absolutely ashamed of the program put in place here for children.
If your kid wants the badge, download the book from online and have them fill out the ‘word search’ and ‘crossword puzzle’ of hard to pronounce long names.
A parent who drove 2 hours one way out of way on an educational vacation trip only to have frustrated kids who instead of going “wow! Cool! Dad look!!!” Are now “can we go? I hate this? Why did you make me come here?”
Bring water for the short hike as there is really only one spot of shade. The building is nice and the displays are okay but this isn’t a fancy National Park in any way. I agree with one of the other reviews, if this is on your way it’s a nice stop, otherwise don’t drive hours out of your way. The staff were friendly and the accommodations were clean. Whale watching was the excitement as the main area is only available for official local/religious events.
Unless you are just staying next door, I would not drive more than 5mins out of my way for this.
