Look out is wonderful but the valley and beach down below is better. but 4x4 is required the road is steep. But the walk down is not to bad. But the walk uphill is a little demanding to me almost 30 minutes. If you plan to walk it take good amount of water for hydration.
Lastly there is a tour that takes you to the bottom, but the tour is 1.5 hours and cost $60 per person. Honestly it wasn't clear what the tour was about, but it's a way to the bottom if you really don't want to drive.
Very beautiful lookout. Looks over a black sand beach, but it is even more worth the drive all the way down to the beach. It's not a long drive, and you can also walk down, but it is quite steep and you must have 4 wheel drive to access it. You can either turn left at the fork and see a waterfall, or turn right and go to the beach. The roads and the beach were well maintained and very beautiful. The waves were very very large, and so we didn't risk going too far into the water but we still had a lot of fun.
Lookout is great. Nice for a 30 minute break. Going into the valley either requires a heavy duty 4x4 or if you consider yourself an excellent hiker and have 6 hours to spare
Absolutely beautiful. You can not go down to the falls itself, as it is privately owned. I highly suggest that if you are driving here that you drive or rent an SUV. You can hike down to the bottom but it's pretty steep terrain. You can also hitchhike to the bottom, as Hawaiians are super cool, but it's understandable if that's not your thing.
What a view! We didn't do the trek into the valley, so it was nice to have this vantage point. If there isn't parking in the lot, you can park along the street. Great information signs on the history of this place. It's definitely worth the detour drive to get here and a must do on the big island.
In short, drive here, take pictures and leave. If you have an SUV, drive to the bottom and hang out at the beach.
