Must have been the time of the year (late January) but we're having a hard time finding sandy beaches around the big island. At low tide the Hapuna Beach didn't have much of a beach to start with. Though we had much better luck there than Mauna Kea Beach. We were able to enjoy the bit of a beach we found for a couple of hours before the tide came all the way up hiding the beach. I really liked it regardless and I would hope to be back someday when I can see what I've seen in Google images for this beach. I didn't snorkel there as the ocean was a little rough but I went in the water and it was delicious and clear in between waves.

Lovely beach.. not much crowded if visited on weekdays. 5 dollar was parking fee when we went. Go and watch sunset it would be splendid.. all the best

Great place to have a relaxing beach day with or without the family. There’s an entry fee to get in if you’re not a state resident (I think it’s $5-15...in that price range). By far one of the most beautiful/popular beaches on the island. Great place for snorkeling or walks on the beach. Also a fun place for boogie boarding or bodysurfing if the waves are good.

SUPER FUN! This is the quintessential white sand beach. My daughters got to venture into the surf for the first time in their lives and had a blast getting killed by the moderately-sized swells. Maybe the highlight of our week-long trip to the island.

Great white sand beach on the Kona side of the island. We arrived early on a Saturday morning, before 9. There were already a good amount of people setting up on the beach but still a good amount of parking spots. By 11 a.m. it was packed with hardly any spots left to park. Water was crystal clear, water was a great temperature and waves were great for boogie boarding or body surfing. Snorkeling was possible but nearer the rocky coastline as there weren't that many fish out in the open because of people swimming. Shaded areas, picnic benches, restrooms, showers to rinse off available.
